DO-BE BLOCKS

I was watching the BYU Channel tonight. I have never had such a cool channel before so I seem to find myself watching it a lot. (that and the radio station)
ANYHOW
tonight was a talk "Parents and Self-Worth" by James D. MacArthur.
He has 10 children within a 12 year mark. Now between 24 and 37. He spoke about the dangers of Reactive Parenting. I was so touched tonight and was frantically taking notes because I knew what he had to say was so important.
For parents, grandparents and anyone else...Bare with me as I try to do him some justice in a readers digest version.
Point One: Create a Family Discussion time that does not include the children. This is a 30 minute time slot to talk about how the children are doing and how we as parents/grandparents can make them "better". He joked and said..."Put a sign on the door that says...Don't bug us. We are talking about you." LOL
Point Two: The DO-BE BLOCKS (like a pro-con list but both good)
  • DO: performance equals worth ---- Rate his/her box for that week from 0-10...0 being not good. Did you fill his/her box with questions about what they did and how they did it? Did you give a dramatic reaction to the task they completed?
  • BE: existence equals worth --- Rate the same as above...0 not being good. Did you make them feel that they were important for just being/existing? Did you write something special on their "personal blackboard" that week? An awesome example of giving to the BE BLOCK is writing your children AND/OR grandchildren love letters!

My Goal is to start writing love letters to each child and Robert once a week. I will also start making a big deal out of the things they do...from Jamie talking nice to Rob taking out the trash.

Children and Cell Phones

So, Rob said that mom and dad have nothing over us when it comes to cell phone issues and "kids/teens/tweens" (whatever the heck they are called these days!).

Yesterday I got a call from AT&T wireless. "Ma'am there has been a large use of one of your phone lines. Can I have the last four of your social?" Heck no! Who are you?? "Ma'am this is in regards to the new phone you just purchased." OH, well that is Mikaela's. Unlimited text ya know and she is not allowed to talk on it cus minutes are counted. "Well, Ma'am your daughter has been on the Internet." WHAT?? Not my daughter. She knows that is a no no! "Yes Ma'am. The bill is $1,900.00." Crys, tears, hyperventilating and total collapse of body. I'M GOING TO KILL HER!!!! "Please don't kill her Ma'am." OH NO...SHE IS GOING TO DIE! Still sobbing...Rob's gonna kill me for not letting him get to her first! "Ma'am let me see what I can do." Eternities later...."I can back date unlimited Internet usage for you and it will be just $15. That means I can get rid of the $1900." SIGH

She lives....without her phone for 2 weeks...but she lives.

Chubba Lubba

Look at this chunky monkey. I love naked pics of Miss Kyrie. She hasn't been wanting to smile for the camera lately. But she's still pretty photogenic. She's probably saying "Mom your totally embarrassing me, get out of here"

New Blog

HI!
I started a blog today because Rob wanted me to start selling my laundry detergent. I am using it though as our family blog still and am also posting quick, cheap recipes for natural cleaning and cooking. I don't know how you get added to it, but it is called
Gibson Crew Got Green
Lots of love....

Zion's National Park

We had a lot of fun at Zion's Park yesterday. It's one of the best things about living in Southern Utah. Adam and Ian were pretending that they were the tour guides to James and me, and I guess Adam got a little too much in to it because he missed a rock in the middle of the path and ate it big time. Pour little guy.

Yipeee!

I know it's a shocker, but I actually got enough guts to tell her no. A bonus is that I told her the truth about why I can't. I said,"I am ok with spontaneous play dates once in a while, but I really don't want to babysit long term. Yahoo!!! Maybe my next task is to tell the Kirby salesman or the Living Scriptures salesmen to jump in a river in stead of letting them in EVERY TIME even though I know I won't buy anything. Maybe.

Update Sarah Update!!!!

I'm sure we are all wondering what you decided to do about the babysitting job. Did you tell her heck no?

There's a first time for everything

This is whole wheat banana bread. So dang good, and notice that the bottom of it isn't torn from the bottom of the pan. I BAKED THIS BREAD! I am so proud of myself. I make banana bread a lot, but the stupid thing always sticks to the bottom of the pan so it turns into half the size of a normal loaf. That makes me so mad. I know, I know, you are probably thinking, "your bread is a little crooked, sarah". Hey, one milestone at a time ok? I might be the next Betty Crocker.

Calling all blue personalities!

I am a definite blue in the personality colorization thing. That means that I am a people pleaser and that sometimes I can let myself get walked on to make someone happy. Which is great sometimes because that means that I would give the coat off my back to those who need it, I love service projects, I love being a mom.... all those nice things, but it can also mean that I say yes to things and then curse myself later because I REALLY didn't want to. Please help me get out of the pickle I am in right now. My friend has kids the exact same age as my boys and she decided that she wants to go to work part time. She thought it would be 'perfect' if they could just come over 'only' two days a week from 10:30p.m-6:30p.m! As soon as she spit that sentence out I was thinking (excuse the language) "HELL NO!" But I really don't know how to say no. So I am asking for some advice from my trusty family members who have maybe been here before. I have to tell her my answer tomorrow.

So proud

So here is what we found out Brianna could do all by herself. I am so proud. Don't mind Adam, he is just sick in the background.

Wonder woman?

I was taking the kids to school the other day and Aidan was in the back complaining that my car was too messy. I told him "well I can't do everything, I'm not wonder woman". Trev said "you are too wonder woman, I wonder what you do all day woman". Can you believe he said that? He is hanging out with his dad way too much. After he said that I gently but firmly pushed him and started laughing. He laughed too, it was all good.
